Air To Water Heat Pump FAQs
How to find the best air to water heat pump installer
1. Start with finding a registered SEAI contractor
This will help ensure you choose an air to water heat pump installer that has the appropriate insurance, qualifications and code of practice, and, ultimately, the capability to complete heat pump installations to the required standard.
It’s also necessary for SEAI heat pump grant purposes to work with an SEAI registered contractor.
Specifically, the air to water heat pump contractor must be registered with SEAI’s Better Energy Homes scheme.
The complete list of registered contractors can be found here.
Search for “Energy Panel” to see our listing.
JFW Renewables and NRG Panel, registered as “Energy Panel Ireland Ltd”, recently merged. Our air to water heat pump installations are delivered via the NRG Panel brand.
Use the relevant “Serviced Areas” checkbox and the “Air to Water Heat Pump” checkbox in the search tool to see a complete list of air to water heat pump installers near you.
The result will include Energy Panel Ireland Ltd along with many other heat pump installers.
So, in order to find the single best air to water heat pump installer for you, it’s important to ask about product and workmanship warranties offered.
2. Ask about warranties
Offering long product and, in particular, workmanship warranties is a good indication of quality. It demonstrates that the air to water heat pump installer stands by the product and service they deliver.
We, registered under “Energy Panel Ireland Ltd”, provide some of the longest warranties as standard.
So, to help find the best heat pump installer for you, be sure to ask contractors about the warranties they offer.
3. Check installer reviews
References and reviews are a great source of insight into a contractor’s service.
Past customers can shed light on the quality of service, product and overall experience actually delivered by an air to water heat pump installer.
Contractors with poor reviews are more likely to deliver a poorer service.
Also, hidden reviews can hint at a less than ideal service.
So be sure to ask for references and check for reviews online before choosing an installer.
Here at JFW Renewables and NRG Panel, we’re proud of our excellent review ratings.

4. Get details about the air to water heat pump they install
Heat pump quality is, of course, crucial.
Some are more efficient than others, some have longer lifespans and warranties vary.
And some may not be eligible for an SEAI grant.
We only use the highest quality products that have market leading efficiencies and manufacturer warranties, and that also meet SEAI’s grant eligibility criteria.
Specifically, we install, as standard, award-winning Daikin Altherma 3 air to water heat pumps with Heatmiser Neostat-V2 programmable thermostats.
5. Get air to water heat pump quotes
Requesting different air to water heat pump quotes will help you find the best installer for you. Not simply because you’ll get heat pump prices, but the quote process will give you insight into service delivery.
Different levels of customer service may be experienced, different solutions may be offered, and different levels of expertise may become apparent.
Similarly, different contractors may have varying levels of customer focus. For example, not every house is suitable for air to water heat pumps. If one contractor is willing to install a heat pump without question, while others suggest different upgrades first, then that can indicate their main focus is not the customer.
In order to deliver our excellent customer satisfaction levels, we don’t always install heat pumps. We only install them where and when appropriate.
To see if a heat pump is appropriate for you, and to get an air to water heat pump quote, complete the short form above.

Air to water heat pump grant
The air to water heat pump grant is €12,500 for houses and €9,500 for apartments.
There is also a grant of €200 available for a technical assessment of your home (payable in conjunction with the heat pump grant).
All homeowners (incl. landlords) with properties built and occupied before 2021 can apply for the heat pump system grant.
There are a number of criteria that you must meet in order to qualify.
To qualify for the air to water heat pump grant:
- – The dwelling must have low heat loss.
- – A technical assessment must be carried out on pre-2007 homes (2007 onwards requires a “Self-Declaration” form be completed).
- – The system must be designed to meet 100% of your space heating demand and at least 80% of your hot water demand.
- – The heat pump system installed must satisfy the technical requirements specified in SEAI’s Better Energy Homes Programme.
- – It must be a first time system, not a replacement or upgrade.
- – Your air to water heat pump installer must be SEAI registered.
All our air to water heat pump installations are eligible for SEAI’s heat pump system grant, and our grant coordinator will help you through the entire process.
Air to water heat pump cost
Air to water heat pumps typically cost between €13,000 and €17,000, including installation.
Many factors impact the cost of a heat pump including:
- – The size of the home – the unit size and power must match the size of the home.
- – Available indoor & outdoor space – different heat pump types, e.g. monobloc and split, have different space requirements.
- – Available grants – this can substantially reduce the overall cost of installing an air to water heat pump.

How air to water heat pumps work
An air to water heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air through an evaporator (a low-temperature heat exchanger). The refrigerant gas inside the evaporator absorbs this heat and evaporates. The gas then passes into a compressor, which increases its temperature and pressure. This hot vapour moves to a second heat exchanger, where it transfers heat to water for heating or for domestic hot water.
The refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve, lowering its pressure, and the cycle repeats.
These systems are popular for heating radiators and underfloor heating systems, and they can also produce hot water.
Unlike ground source heat pumps, air-to-water systems don’t need underground piping, making them cheaper and easier to install.
Air to water heat pumps are efficient. They deliver three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
Also, most systems come with integrated heating controls, allowing precise scheduling of heating and hot water to match household needs, reducing energy usage by up to 20% (according to seai.ie).
